Bilal “Billy” Dib has been a fighter since birth and battled chronic asthma as a child. To try and beat the condition, he started boxing at 12 years old at a local youth club in New South Wales.
Billy won 98 out of 133 bouts as an amateur boxer and won three belts in the process. Due to his young age and agility on the ring, he was nicknamed “The Kid” by sports analysts. His success also earned him a spot at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) to train for the 2004 Olympics. However, a motorcycle accident happened, and he couldn’t make the final team.
But just like with his past health condition, the rejection didn’t stop him from becoming a champion. Billy turned professional in 2004 and went to win his first 21 matches. In 2006, he went to the U.S.A where he trained with Mike Tyson and met Shane Mosely. He signed with Golden Boy Productions and in 2008, he won the IBO Super-Featherweight championship. Billy would go on to capture the IBF Featherweight title, which he held from 2011 to 2013.
